Reviving the Thrill of Vintage Racing

The Vintage Racing Organization of America (VROA) was born out of a simple passion: a love for the excitement and heritage of vintage open-wheel racing. In 1990, Brian Shultz, a regular at Kalamazoo Speedway, couldn't shake his fascination with the Canadian Coupes and Coaches that had been racing at the track since 1984. These cars brought back memories of the 1920s-1940s racing era that Brian had always admired. Driven by this passion, he decided to see if others shared his interest.

He put up flyers around the speedway, hoping to find a few like-minded enthusiasts. To his surprise, 75 people responded, all eager to bring these classic cars back to life. By early 1991, the VROA was officially formed, adopting the Canadian rules for Vintage Modifieds and setting out to build cars that captured the spirit of those early racing days.

The early years weren’t easy. With just a few cars and limited tracks willing to host them, the club faced an uphill battle. But the core group of racers stayed committed, determined to see their vision through. They raced wherever they could, with Southwest Michigan Speedway becoming their home base. Slowly but surely, the club started to grow.

By 1996, the VROA had gained traction. The number of cars increased, and so did the excitement around the races. What started as a small group of enthusiasts had evolved into a thriving community, all united by their love for vintage modified racing. Today, the VROA continues to keep that passion alive, offering races that are as thrilling as they are nostalgic, celebrating a golden era of motorsport.
